My intention going into this piece was to both explore things such as range, rhythmicand dynamic capacity and extended techniques relating to the bass clarinet as wellas exploring the harmonic capabilities of the octatonic scale. The compositional process behind this piece started with deciding what key andchord progression i wanted to use, i ended up using the octatonic scale in c with thechord progression C7>Cm7>F#m>Edim. After deciding on the progression I playedaround with a few melodic and rhythmic ideas, including inversion of rhythms fromone bar to the next and also experimented with things such as trills and Envelopes. Iplayed around with the idea of rhythmic repetition without melodic repetition for alittle while, changing the chord around to create some interesting ideas around thesame intervals. I also messed around with having small motifs for different animalsand objects for example the trills representing birds, the envelope representing alions roar and a repeated f#>c representing a police siren. The formal structure ofthis piece is ABCDAE, this gives the piece a more progressive, storytelling approachwith new ideas being introduced as the piece unfolds.

Approch to the piece
My intention going into this piece was to both explore the timbrel colour that comesout of the combination of Bb trumpet and piano. The compositional process behindthis piece started with deciding a chord progression, in the end i enjoyed theprogression E (add9), C (add9), GMaj, F#m progression After deciding on theprogression I played around with a few melodic and rhythmic ideas, includingreversing of rhythms from previous bars and transposition of intervals.i also playedaround with each instrument having a small solo at different areas The formalstructure of this piece is A,A,B,C,D, this gives the piece a few different motific ideasto play with if a future reprise is required or if i want to put the motif into anotherpiece in the future.
My intention going into this piece was to explore vocal writing within the confines oflyrics and vocal and piano accompaniment. The compositional process behind thispiece started with mapping out a melody based on the lyrics and how I mightverbalise them, After deciding on the melody I played around with some moreharmonic ideas to give the piece more character and emotional weight. The formalstructure of this piece is A,B,C, this gives the piece some blocks of ideas that are repeated but also somewhat different and both progresses the piece forward without making it feel all over the place.
